2023 - Shubh Janmastami Type 2 | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued souvenir tokens in 2023 to mark the auspicious occasion of Shubh Janmashtami. Two different designs were issued on the same theme in different metals, with the gold souvenir classified as Type 2.

Krishna Janmashtami is a sacred Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most revered deities in Indian tradition. The festival holds a special place in the religious and cultural life of India and is celebrated with devotion, music, prayers and colourful festivities.

The story of Krishna's birth is closely associated with Mathura, where he was born to Devaki and Vasudeva. His birth took place under extraordinary circumstances during the rule of King Kamsa, who feared a prophecy that Devaki's eighth son would bring about his downfall. Krishna was born at midnight, and Vasudeva secretly carried the infant across the Yamuna to Gokul, where he was brought up by Nanda and Yashoda.

Janmashtami is traditionally observed with fasting and prayers throughout the day. Devotees gather in temples and homes to sing bhajans, recite devotional verses and listen to stories from Krishna's life. As midnight approaches, preparations are made to celebrate the divine birth, with the infant Krishna placed in a decorated cradle and worshipped with great devotion.

The festival also recalls the enchanting childhood of Krishna in Gokul and Vrindavan. His playful nature, love of butter, friendship with the cowherd community and numerous stories of his childhood have become an inseparable part of Indian folklore and cultural traditions.

In many parts of India, the occasion is marked by Dahi Handi, in which groups form human pyramids to reach and break a pot suspended high above the ground. The tradition recalls Krishna's playful attempts to obtain butter and curd along with his companions.

Beautifully decorated temples, illuminated homes, devotional music and traditional performances create a festive atmosphere. Children dressed as Krishna and Radha add a special charm to the celebrations, while families prepare traditional sweets and delicacies as offerings.

The significance of Krishna Janmashtami extends beyond the celebration of Krishna's birth. His teachings, particularly those presented in the Bhagavad Gita, continue to convey profound messages about duty, righteousness, devotion and the importance of performing one's responsibilities with sincerity.
