2023 - Shubh Janmastami Type 1 | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued souvenir tokens in 2023 to mark the auspicious occasion of Shubh Janmashtami. Two different designs were issued on the same theme in different metals, with the silver souvenir classified as Type 1.

Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Janmashtami, is one of the most important Hindu festivals, celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The festival is observed with great devotion and enthusiasm across India and in many parts of the world.

According to Hindu tradition, Lord Krishna was born at midnight on the Ashtami Tithi, the eighth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada. He was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, at a time when the kingdom was ruled by the tyrannical King Kamsa. To protect the newborn Krishna, Vasudeva carried him across the Yamuna and entrusted him to Nanda and Yashoda in Gokul.

The midnight birth of Lord Krishna is the central moment of Janmashtami celebrations. Devotees observe fasting throughout the day and gather in temples for prayers, devotional songs and religious ceremonies. At midnight, the symbolic birth of Krishna is celebrated with the ringing of bells, chanting, the offering of sweets and the ceremonial cradle of the infant Krishna.

The festival is closely associated with the joyful childhood of Krishna in Gokul and Vrindavan. Stories of his playful activities, his love for butter, his friendship with the Gopas and Gopis, and his devotion to his loved ones form an important part of the celebrations. In several regions, Dahi Handi is organised, symbolising Krishna's childhood pastime of reaching pots of curd and butter.

Temples and homes are beautifully decorated with flowers, lights and images of Lord Krishna. Devotees prepare traditional sweets and delicacies, while children often dress as Krishna and Radha. Devotional music, dance and dramatic performances depicting episodes from Krishna's life add to the festive atmosphere.

Krishna Janmashtami also carries a deeper spiritual significance. Lord Krishna's teachings in the Bhagavad Gita emphasise dharma, devotion, righteous action and spiritual wisdom. His life and teachings continue to inspire people to follow the path of righteousness and remain devoted to truth and duty.
