2019 - Lokmata Rani Rashmoni | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued a commemorative souvenir token in 2019 to celebrate the 227 Years of Lokmata Rani Rashmoni.

Lokmata Rani Rashmoni (1793–1861) was a prominent philanthropist, social reformer, and spiritual figure of 19th-century Bengal. Widely respected for her courage, compassion, and dedication to public welfare, she played an important role in the social and cultural life of Bengal during a period of significant change.

Born on September 28, 1793, in the village of Halisahar near Kolkata, Rani Rashmoni came from a modest background. Following her marriage to Rajachandra Das, she became involved in managing the family’s extensive estate after his death. Despite facing considerable challenges, she demonstrated remarkable administrative ability and became known for her independent and determined leadership.

Rani Rashmoni was deeply devoted to Goddess Kali and is best remembered for establishing the Dakshineswar Kali Temple in Kolkata. The temple complex, situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, was inaugurated in 1855 and later became closely associated with Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, whose spiritual presence helped establish Dakshineswar as an important centre of spiritual heritage.

Her contributions extended well beyond religious activities. Rani Rashmoni supported the construction and maintenance of roads, bathing ghats, waterways, and other public facilities. She also provided assistance to the poor and pilgrims and stood firmly against social injustices affecting ordinary people.

She was known for her courage in dealing with the colonial authorities and for protecting the interests of local communities. Her actions demonstrated a strong sense of social responsibility and a commitment to justice, earning her the affectionate title “Lokmata,” meaning “Mother of the People.”

Rani Rashmoni passed away on February 19, 1861, but her legacy continues through the institutions and public works associated with her name. The Dakshineswar Kali Temple remains one of Kolkata’s most important religious landmarks, while her life continues to be remembered as an inspiring example of philanthropy, leadership, devotion, and service to society.
