2025 - 50 Years of Sikkim Statehood | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued commemorative coloured souvenir tokens in 2025 to mark 50 Years of Statehood of Sikkim.

The 50 Years of Statehood of Sikkim marks a significant milestone in the history of the Himalayan state. Sikkim became the 22nd state of the Indian Union on May 16, 1975, following the passage of the Constitution (Thirty-Sixth Amendment) Act, 1975. This historic development brought Sikkim into the constitutional framework of India and marked the beginning of a new chapter in its political and administrative history.

The journey towards statehood was an important period in Sikkim's history. Previously, Sikkim had a distinct political status as a protectorate of India, while retaining its own institution of the Chogyal. Following political developments and a referendum in 1975, the people of Sikkim expressed their support for integration with India. The Indian Parliament subsequently approved the constitutional amendment that formally admitted Sikkim as a state.

The capital city of Gangtok serves as the administrative and cultural centre of Sikkim. The state is renowned for its spectacular Himalayan landscape, including snow-covered mountains, valleys, forests, rivers and high-altitude lakes. Mount Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, holds a particularly important place in the cultural and spiritual traditions of the people of Sikkim.

The five-decade journey of Sikkim as a state has been marked by considerable development in education, healthcare, infrastructure, tourism and connectivity. At the same time, the state has continued to preserve its rich cultural heritage and distinctive traditions, shaped by the diverse communities that call Sikkim home.

The 50th Anniversary of Statehood provided an opportunity to celebrate Sikkim's achievements, remember its historical journey and acknowledge the contributions of its people towards the development of the state. The milestone also reflected the state's journey from its unique historical position to becoming an integral part of India's federal structure.
