2022 - Shree Ganesh Chaturthi | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Mumbai, issued gold and silver souvenir tokens in 2022 to mark the Shree Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

Shree Ganesh Chaturthi is one of India's most popular Hindu festivals, celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity revered as the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom, prosperity, and auspicious beginnings. 

The festival is observed during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, generally falling in August or September. Celebrations traditionally begin with the installation of beautifully crafted Ganesha idols in homes, temples, and public pandals. Devotees offer prayers, flowers, durva grass, modaks, fruits, and other offerings to Lord Ganesha.

The festival is particularly celebrated on a grand scale in Maharashtra, where public celebrations became an important cultural tradition. Over time, Ganesh Chaturthi has grown into a major community festival across many parts of India, with elaborate decorations, cultural programmes, devotional music, and processions.

One of the most important rituals is the immersion of the Ganesha idol, known as Visarjan. After the period of worship, devotees carry the idols in colourful processions and immerse them in water, symbolising the return of Lord Ganesha to his divine abode and the cycle of creation and dissolution.

Ganesh Chaturthi also carries a broader message of unity, devotion, community participation, and cultural heritage. Public celebrations bring people together across communities and generations, while traditional music, art, crafts, and performances add to the cultural richness of the festival.

The festival has also found representation in India's numismatic and commemorative tradition.
