2023 - Happy Onam | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Hyderabad, issued silver souvenir token in 2023 to mark the auspicious occasion of the Onam festival.

Onam is one of the most important and vibrant festivals of Kerala, celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. It is a harvest festival that showcases the rich cultural heritage, traditions and spirit of togetherness associated with Kerala.

The festival is traditionally associated with King Mahabali, a legendary ruler known for his generosity, righteousness and prosperous reign. According to popular belief, Mahabali visits Kerala during Onam to see his people, who welcome him with happiness and elaborate celebrations. The festival therefore symbolises prosperity, equality and the enduring bond between the ruler and his people.

Onam is celebrated over ten days, beginning with Atham and reaching its grand conclusion on Thiruvonam. Homes are decorated with beautiful Pookkalam, intricate floral designs arranged at the entrance. Families also prepare the traditional Onam Sadya, a grand vegetarian feast served on banana leaves with a variety of dishes and delicacies.

The celebrations are enriched by Kerala's traditional art forms and cultural activities. Vallam Kali, the famous snake boat race, attracts large crowds, while traditional dances, music and folk performances add colour to the festivities. People wear traditional attire, visit family and friends, and participate in various community celebrations.

Onam is more than a harvest festival; it is a celebration of Kerala's cultural identity and the values of harmony, prosperity, gratitude and togetherness. It brings people together irrespective of differences and continues to be one of the most significant celebrations in Kerala.

The Government of India will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin  as part of the Centenary Celebration of  Mahanayak Uttam Kumar . The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 3, 2026, confirming this coin. Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, born Arun Kumar Chatterjee on September 3, 1926, was one of the most celebrated actors in the history of Indian cinema. Revered as the “Mahanayak” of Bengali cinema, he captivated audiences with his remarkable acting, charismatic screen presence and versatility. His unforgettable partnership with Suchitra Sen created some of the most iconic films of Bengali cinema. With classics such as Saptapadi, Harano Sur, Nayak and Antony Firingee, Uttam Kumar left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations. New Commemorative Coin: 1000 Years of Modhera Sun Temple

The Government of India will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin to celebrate the  1000 Years of the Modhera Sun Temple, Gujarat . The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 18, 2026, confirming this coin. The Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat is one of India’s finest surviving temples dedicated to Surya, the Sun God. Built in the early 11th century during the reign of Solanki King Bhima I, the temple is renowned for its intricate carvings, grand architecture and carefully planned eastward orientation. The complex consists of the magnificent Surya Kund, Sabha Mandapa and the main shrine, all decorated with detailed sculptures depicting Hindu deities, celestial figures, dancers, musicians and mythological scenes.
