2022 - Maa Durga | Mint Souvenir Token
The India Government Mint, Mumbai, issued the souvenir token in 2022, featuring Maa Durga, to mark the auspicious occasion of Navaratri.
Maa Durga is one of the most revered goddesses in Hinduism and is widely worshipped as a symbol of divine power, strength, protection, and the triumph of good over evil. The name Durga is associated with the power to overcome difficulties and protect devotees from harm.
According to Hindu tradition, Goddess Durga was created through the combined divine energies of the gods to defeat the powerful buffalo demon Mahishasura. Unable to be defeated by the gods individually, Mahishasura was ultimately overcome by Durga after a fierce battle. Her victory represents the triumph of dharma and righteousness over evil and arrogance.
Maa Durga is traditionally depicted with multiple arms, each carrying a divine weapon or sacred object bestowed upon her by the gods. These attributes represent different forms of divine strength and protection. She is commonly shown riding a lion or tiger, symbolising courage, power, and fearlessness.
The worship of Maa Durga holds particular importance during Navaratri, the nine-night festival dedicated to the various manifestations of the Goddess. Devotees observe fasting, prayers, devotional singing, and special rituals during these days. The festival culminates in Vijayadashami or Dussehra, celebrating the victory of good over evil.
Durga Puja is especially prominent in West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Tripura, and other parts of eastern India. Elaborate idols of Maa Durga are installed in beautifully decorated pandals, where devotees gather for worship and cultural celebrations. The festival has also become an important expression of India's artistic and cultural traditions.
Maa Durga is also worshipped in different forms, including Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati, and Katyayani, each representing different aspects of divine feminine power. Her many manifestations reflect the belief that the Goddess provides strength, wisdom, prosperity, and protection according to the needs of her devotees.
The enduring worship of Maa Durga represents the belief that divine strength ultimately prevails over injustice and evil. Her image continues to inspire devotion and serves as a powerful symbol of courage, compassion, righteousness, and protection.
