2022 - Mata Sherawali | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued its first coloured silver souvenir token in 2022, featuring Mata Sherawali, to mark the auspicious occasion of Navaratri.

Mata Sherawali, a revered form of Goddess Durga, is one of the most widely worshipped manifestations of Shakti in India. She is often depicted riding a lion, symbolising courage, strength, and the triumph of good over evil. The name “Sherawali” is associated with her majestic lion mount and is especially popular in North Indian devotional traditions.

Goddess Durga represents divine feminine power, protection, strength, and righteousness. According to Hindu tradition, she fought and defeated the buffalo demon Mahishasura, who had become a powerful threat to the gods and the world. Her victory symbolises the triumph of righteousness over evil and divine power over arrogance and injustice.

Mata Sherawali is particularly worshipped during Navaratri, the nine-night festival dedicated to the various manifestations of Goddess Durga. Devotees observe prayers, fasting, devotional singing, and special rituals throughout the festival. The tenth day, Vijayadashami or Dussehra, celebrates the victory of good over evil.

The image of Mata Sherawali is traditionally portrayed with multiple arms carrying divine weapons and other sacred objects. These attributes represent different aspects of divine power and protection. Her lion represents bravery and fearlessness, while her calm and compassionate expression signifies benevolence and the protection offered to her devotees.

Navaratri is celebrated in different ways across India. In West Bengal, Durga Puja is marked by elaborate idols, artistic pandals, rituals, cultural programmes, and processions. In Gujarat, the festival is celebrated through Garba and Dandiya, while in many northern regions, devotees observe fasts and worship the Goddess in her different forms.

The worship of Mata Sherawali therefore combines devotion, spirituality, cultural traditions, and the celebration of feminine divine power. Her enduring popularity reflects the deep-rooted belief in the protective and nurturing power of the Goddess.
