2023 - Onam Festival | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Mumbai, issued gold and silver souvenir tokens in 2023 to mark the auspicious occasion of the Onam festival.

Onam is one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals of Kerala, reflecting the state’s rich cultural heritage, traditions and spirit of togetherness. The festival is observed during the month of Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam calendar, and usually falls in August or September.

According to popular tradition, Onam commemorates the annual homecoming of King Mahabali, a legendary ruler remembered for his generosity, righteousness and just rule. It is believed that during his reign, Kerala experienced a period of prosperity, equality and happiness. The festival celebrates the occasion when Mahabali is believed to return to visit his people.

The ten-day celebrations begin with Atham and culminate on Thiruvonam, the most important day of the festival. Homes are beautifully decorated with Pookkalam, intricate floral arrangements made at the entrance. Traditional celebrations also include the grand Onam Sadya, a vegetarian feast served on banana leaves and consisting of a variety of traditional dishes.

Onam is also associated with Kerala’s vibrant cultural traditions, including Vallam Kali or snake boat races, traditional dances, music and folk performances. People dress in traditional attire, visit temples and spend time with family and friends. The festivities bring together people from different communities and celebrate harmony, prosperity and the cultural identity of Kerala.

Beyond its religious and traditional significance, Onam represents the values of prosperity, equality, gratitude and togetherness. It remains a cherished festival that connects Kerala’s people with their history, folklore and enduring cultural traditions.
