2023 - Raksha Bandhan Type 3 (Kolkata Mint) | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, issued souvenir tokens in 2023 to mark the auspicious occasion of the Raksha Bandhan festival. As multiple designs were issued on the same theme, this has been classified as Type 3.

Raksha Bandhan is a traditional Indian festival that celebrates the cherished relationship between brothers and sisters. The festival carries a deep message of affection, respect, care and the lasting bond shared between family members.

Observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Shravana, the festival is marked by a simple yet meaningful ceremony. The sister ties a Rakhi, a sacred thread, around her brother’s wrist and offers prayers for his happiness, health and prosperity. The brother reciprocates with a gift and a promise of continued love, care and support.

The celebrations begin with families preparing for the occasion, purchasing Rakhis and traditional sweets, and decorating their homes. During the ceremony, the Rakhi is often accompanied by a tilak, aarti and the offering of sweets, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.

Raksha Bandhan has been enriched by numerous stories and traditions found in Indian culture. Among the best-known is the story associated with Lord Krishna and Draupadi, which is often remembered for its message of affection and protection. Such traditions have helped the festival remain deeply rooted in India's cultural consciousness.

The festival is also an occasion for families to reunite and celebrate together. Brothers and sisters exchange gifts, share meals and recall memories of their childhood. For those living far apart, the festival provides an opportunity to reconnect and reaffirm their relationship.

The sacred thread of Raksha Bandhan carries a significance that extends beyond its physical form. It represents an emotional bond built on trust, responsibility and mutual affection. In contemporary times, the spirit of Raksha Bandhan is also expressed through relationships based on friendship, respect and solidarity.

Raksha Bandhan therefore remains a beautiful celebration of family and human relationships. Its timeless traditions continue to remind us that love, care and mutual support are among the most valuable bonds in life.
