2019 - Shree Ganesh Chaturthi | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Mumbai, issued a commemorative souvenir token in 2019 to mark the Shree Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

Shree Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals in India, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity revered as the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings. The festival marks the birth of Lord Ganesha and is observed with great devotion, particularly in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and several other parts of India.

The celebrations traditionally begin with the installation of beautifully crafted Ganesha idols in homes, temples, and public pandals. Devotees offer prayers, flowers, fruits, sweets, and especially modak, which is regarded as one of Lord Ganesha’s favourite offerings. Shree Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated over several days, with the duration varying according to local traditions. The festival concludes with Visarjan, when the idol is carried in a procession and immersed in water. The immersion symbolises the cycle of creation and dissolution and the belief that Lord Ganesha returns to his divine abode, with devotees seeking his blessings for a prosperous and obstacle-free life.

The festival also has a strong cultural and social significance. Public celebrations bring together people from different communities and backgrounds, fostering unity, devotion, and a spirit of collective participation. In modern times, increasing emphasis has also been placed on eco-friendly celebrations and the use of natural materials for Ganesha idols.
