2023 - Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple | Mint Souvenir Token

The India Government Mint, Mumbai, issued silver souvenir tokens in 2023 for the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple Trust, Prabhadevi, Mumbai. These sets were made available exclusively through the temple counter.

The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple Trust manages the renowned Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple at Prabhadevi in Mumbai. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, who is worshipped as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, and as the deity of wisdom, prosperity and auspicious beginnings.

The temple was first consecrated on November 19, 1801. The original temple was a small structure housing a black stone idol of Shree Siddhivinayak. A distinctive feature of the idol is its trunk turned towards the right. The four-armed deity holds a lotus, an axe, prayer beads and a bowl of Modaks, while the figures of Riddhi and Siddhi are positioned on either side.

Over the years, the temple underwent a major transformation. Renovation began in 1990 and was completed within three years, resulting in the present multi-storeyed structure. The temple features a prominent gold-plated central dome and several smaller golden and panchadhatu crowns. The architectural design was developed by architect Shri Sharad Athale, with the temple's traditional character preserved while incorporating a modern structure.

The Trust is not limited to the management of religious activities. It undertakes several charitable and social initiatives, including financial assistance for medical treatment, a dialysis centre, educational support and a library. The Trust also operates a Book Bank scheme providing educational resources to students in Maharashtra.

The temple has embraced modern technology to make its services more accessible to devotees. Its official platforms provide facilities such as online Puja bookings, live Darshan and personalised online Darshan.

The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple therefore represents more than a place of worship. With its centuries-old history, distinctive architecture, devotional traditions and extensive charitable activities, the Trust and temple have become an important part of Mumbai's religious, cultural and social landscape.
