2026 - Shri Ghanshyam Dass Jain | Commemorative Coin

The 14th commemorative coin of 2026 was released to mark the Birth Centenary of Shri Ghanshyam Dass Jain.

Shri Ghanshyam Dass Jain (1925–1997), popularly known as “Sangeet Samrat” and “Sur Samrat”, was a multifaceted personality whose life was closely associated with music, spirituality, culture, business and social service. Born on August 11, 1925, in Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, in undivided India, he developed a deep interest in music from an early age. Music remained an important part of his life for more than five decades, during which he composed and performed devotional, patriotic and philosophical music rooted in Indian traditions and spiritual values.

Shri Ghanshyam Dass Jain was proficient in several musical instruments, including the harmonium, flute, tabla, violin and mouth organ. His musical activities extended beyond performances to devotional publications, recordings, stage programmes and musical plays. His Ghanshyam Bhajanawali brought together his devotional compositions, while his musical productions used art and performance to convey spiritual, moral and social messages. His contribution to music was recognised during the 1960s when he was honoured with the titles “Sangeet Samrat” and “Sur Samrat” by Shri Mangal Dass Pakvasa, who had served as Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Bombay and Mysore.

The Partition of India in 1947 became a significant turning point in his life. Having come from Multan, he experienced the upheaval personally and became involved in helping Jain and Hindu families escape from Pakistan and settle in India. Despite losing his own wealth during the Partition, he rebuilt his life and business and continued his efforts to assist those affected by displacement and hardship.

His entrepreneurial interests extended into several fields, including textiles, wool and the film industry. From the 1970s, he became associated with film financing, production, distribution and exhibition. At the same time, his interest in theatre and cultural activities continued. Among the plays associated with him were Garib Ki Chingariyan, Dharm Shakti, Karm Se Hare Hum Aur Dharm Se Hare Karm and Vikram Betal. Through these activities, he sought to connect entertainment with cultural, spiritual and social values.

His commitment to community welfare was reflected in the organisations and initiatives he established. During the 1980s, he founded the Jain Kushal Yuvak Mandal and Jin Kushal Suri Jain Mahila Mandal, encouraging participation in social and community activities. In the 1990s, he established Sargam Mandal to provide opportunities for emerging singers and promote devotional music. These initiatives reflected his belief in nurturing talent while keeping cultural and spiritual traditions alive.

Shri Ghanshyam Dass Jain passed away on December 1, 1997. His legacy continues through his musical compositions, cultural activities, social initiatives and the institutions associated with his work. His life remains an example of how music, enterprise, spirituality and service can come together in the journey of an individual who dedicated his talents to both artistic expression and society.
