New Commemorative Coin: Vijaya Raje Scindia

The Government of India has decided to celebrate the Birth Centenary of Vijaya Raje Scindia. The 12-member National Implementation Committee (NIC), headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, will outline programs and activities for year-long celebrations, commencing from October 11, 2018, to October 11, 2019.


A commemorative coin of denomination Rs 100 and a commemorative postage stamp are proposed to be released in her honor during the commemoration period. Additional activities that may be undertaken include seminars, lectures, publications, and programs focused on women empowerment.

Vijaya Raje Scindia (12 October 1919 – 25 January 2001), born Lekha Divyeshwari Devi and popularly known as the Rajmata of Gwalior, was a prominent Indian political personality. Inspired by the freedom movement after completing her education, she actively joined the struggle for independence. With a strong belief in educating the girl child and women empowerment, she dedicated herself to these causes.

Mrs. Vijaya Raje Scindia served as a Member of Parliament for many years, spanning from 1957 to 1998. Actively engaged in various social activities, especially in the field of women empowerment, she collaborated with different organizations dedicated to the upliftment of women through education. She passed away on January 25, 2001.

Other potential coin releases are scheduled, including the Birth Centenary of Dr. M G Ramachandran and the 350th Prakash Utsav of Shri Guru Gobind Singh.
