PM Modi Releases ₹150 Commemorative Coin on Mahatma Gandhi
The Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi released a ₹150 commemorative coin and the six postal stamps to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today, October 2, 2019 while inaugurating the Swachh Bharat Diwas in Ahmedabad.
The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, while addressing a gathering of Sarpanches at the ‘Swachh Bharat Diwas’ programme, remarked that the entire world is commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, and the occasion has become even more memorable with the United Nations recently releasing a postal stamp in honour of Gandhiji. He shared that he has had the opportunity to visit Sabarmati Ashram many times in his life, and each visit, including the one today, filled him with renewed inspiration and energy.
The Prime Minister announced that India’s villages have declared themselves free from open defecation, congratulating every citizen—particularly rural residents, Sarpanches, and all those who have tirelessly worked for the cause of cleanliness. He emphasized that people of all ages, backgrounds, and socio-economic groups came together for this movement based on dignity, respect, and collective responsibility. He added that the world is astonished by India’s achievement, noting that the nation has provided toilet facilities to over 60 crore people within just 60 months, with more than 11 crore toilets constructed under the mission.
Highlighting that public participation and voluntarism have been the driving force behind the success of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the entire nation for its wholehearted support. He stressed that collective effort will remain vital for the success of other major government initiatives, such as the Jal Jeevan Mission and the campaign to eliminate single-use plastic by 2022.
Reaffirming his government’s commitment to fulfilling Mahatma Gandhi’s vision, the Prime Minister referred to various initiatives aimed at promoting self-reliance, ensuring Ease of Living, and taking development to the last mile. He urged citizens to make personal resolutions for the nation’s progress and to work with determination toward their fulfillment, stating that the combined strength of 130 crore such resolutions can lead to transformative change.
