New Commemorative Coin: Shri Jawaharlal Darda

The Government of India will be issuing a  Rs 100 commemorative coin to celebrate the Birth Centenary of Shri Jawaharlal Darda. A gazette notification has been issued on April 26, 2022, confirming the same.


Shri. Jawaharlal A. Darda (Babuji) was a veteran Indian freedom fighter and a dedicated politician of Indian National Congress INC. He was the Founder Editor of Lokmat group of newspapers (now Lokmat Media). He was a well-known Journalist and a Prominent Politician of his time.

The metal composition of the coin will be Quaternary Alloy (50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel and 5% Zinc). The weight of the coin will be 35 grams and 44 mm in diameter with 200 serrations at the edge. The description of the coin is as below. 

Obverse:  The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed  below, flanked  with the  word “भारत” and  "INDIA" at right and left periphery of the coin with Rupee Symbol "₹” and denomination  value “100” in International Numerals below the Ashoka Lion Capital.

Reverse: This face of coin shall bear the image of the Shri Jawaharlal Darda in the center of the coin. The  inscription  “श्री जवाहरलाल दर्डा की  जन्म शताब्दी” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery and the inscription “Birth Centenary of Shri Jawaharlal Darda” in English on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “1923" and  "2023” in international numeral shall be flanked respectively on right and left middle periphery of the coin.

The commemorative coin is expected to be issued in 2023, given that the 100th Birth Anniversary falls on 2nd July 2023.

The Governor of Karnataka, Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, along with Jainacharya Shri Jin Piyush Sagar Surishwarji, will release commemorative coins and postage stamps to celebrate the 2900th Janm Kalyanak and 2800th Nirvan Kalyanak of the 23rd Tirthankara, Shri Parshvanath Bhagwan, at Bhopalgarh, District Jodhpur, Rajasthan, on December 25, 2024.
