New Commemorative Coin: Centennial Birth Year of N.T. Rama Rao

The Government of India will be issuing a ₹100 commemorative coin on occasion of Centennial Birth Year of Shri Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on March 20, 2023, confirming this coin.

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (28 May 1923 – 18 January 1996), often referred to by his initials NTR, was an Indian actor, filmmaker and politician who served as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for seven years over three terms. He starred in over 300 films, predominantly in Telugu cinema, and was referred by the media as Viswa Vikhyatha Nata Sarwa Bhouma (transl. Universal star of acting).

The metal composition of the ₹100 coin will be Quaternary Alloy (50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel and 5% Zinc). The weight of the coin will be 35 grams and 44 mm in diameter with 200 serrations at the edge. The description of the coin is as below. 

Obverse:  The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed  below, flanked  with the  word “भारत” and  "INDIA" at right and left periphery of the coin with Rupee Symbol "₹” and denomination  value “100” in International Numerals below the Ashoka Lion Capital.

Reverse: This face of coin shall bear the image of the N.T. Rama Rao in the center of the coin. The text “1923 - 2023” is inscripted below the image. The inscription “श्री नंदामुरी तारक राम राव की जन्म शताब्दी वर्ष” shall be written in Devnagari script on the upper periphery and the inscription “Centennial Birth Year of Shri Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao” in English is depicted on the lower periphery of the coin.

The commemorative coin is expected to be released on May 28, 2023. The possibility of this coin was first mentioned on this blog in January 2023, following remarks by former Union Minister Daggubati Purandeswari, who stated that the centenary of her father, the late N.T. Rama Rao, would be celebrated magnificently with the issuance of a commemorative coin.
