PM Modi Releases ₹75 Coin on International Year of Millets 2023

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi released the ₹75 commemorative coin, postage stamp and special cover on International Year of Millets 2023 while inaugurating the Global Millets (Shree Anna) Conference at Subramaniam Hall, NASC Complex today, on March 18, 2023 at New Delhi.

The event was attended by Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar; Union Minister for External Affairs, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar; Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya; Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal; and Union Ministers of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Kailash Choudhary and Smt. Shobha Karandlaje, among others.

Addressing the Global Millets Conference, the Prime Minister congratulated the organizers and highlighted India’s efforts in promoting millets, declaring 2023 as the International Year of Millets after persistent efforts by India. He noted that the conference would focus on millet farming, economy, health benefits, and farmers’ income, with participation from Gram Panchayats, Krishi Kendras, schools, universities, and over 75 lakh farmers virtually connected. The occasion also marked the unveiling of a commemorative coin and postal stamp, the launch of a book on millet standards, and the declaration of the Indian Institute of Millets Research as a Global Centre of Excellence.

The Prime Minister appreciated the youth initiatives and startups supporting millet enterprises and emphasized India’s branding of millets as “Shree Anna”, highlighting its nutritional, economic, and environmental benefits, including water efficiency, chemical-free cultivation, and climate resilience. He noted that millets are increasingly consumed at home and through processed products, creating opportunities for 2.5 crore small farmers and rural women engaged in production and marketing.

Shri Modi emphasized the global significance of Shree Anna under the G20 motto “One Earth, One Family, One Future”, comparing it to India’s successful promotion of Yoga, Ayurveda, and the International Solar Alliance. He encouraged international collaboration to develop shared millet supply chains and sustainable agricultural practices, stressing millets’ potential to improve nutrition, prevent lifestyle diseases, and strengthen food security for both the Global South and North.

Concluding, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that the conference would create a practical roadmap for millet promotion and called for joint efforts from farmers, experts, and stakeholders to enhance Shree Anna’s contribution to India’s prosperity and global well-being.

It's the third commemorative coin of the year 2023 after 150th Birth Anniversary of Shri Ram Chandra Ji and 75 years of Raising of National Cadet Corps (NCC). The IYM 2023 commemorative coin is minted by India Government Mint, Mumbai.
