Odisha to Celebrate 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab

The 125th Birth Anniversary of the prominent statesman and public hero, Utkal Keshari Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, will be commemorated with year-long celebrations. A special three-day event will be held in Bhubaneswar, tentatively from November 21 to 23, 2024, to mark Dr. Mahatab’s birth anniversary, followed by various programs throughout the year to honor his legacy.

Dr. Mahatab, known for his role as a nationalist leader, will be celebrated through numerous initiatives aimed at spreading the spirit of Odisha’s pride and identity, or asmita. Plans include the production of a biopic on Dr. Mahatab, which will be screened in schools and colleges to inspire the younger generation.

To further honour his contributions, a ₹100 commemorative coin will be issued, as confirmed by the Ministry of Finance’s gazette notification on December 29, 2023. 

The Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, announced on November 5, 2024, that the Government of India has decided to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Utkal Keshari Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab as a national event. He stated that this celebration is a significant tribute to the legendary nationalist leader of Odisha and a proud testament to Odia Asmita, while extending his heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji, and Union Culture Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat Ji.

This will be the third commemorative coin issued in 2024 to honor a former Chief Minister. A ₹100 coin was released to commemorate the Birth Centenary of Shri Karpoori Thakur in January 2024 and the Birth Centenary of Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi in August 2024.
